Court refuses to consider Liabedzka’s suit against foreign travel restrictions

Tsentralny district court of Minsk has refused to consider the suit filed by Anatol Liabedzka, chairman of the United Civil Party, against the foreign travel restrictions, imposed on him by the state organs.

The suit was filed 15 May. A.Liabedzka demanded that Tsentralny district police department of Minsk excluded him from the database of the persons who were temporary banned to travel abroad.

In his interview to the BelaPAN Liabedzka says that the court has not even accepted the suit for consideration and that he was to appeal against the restrictions to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

‘I have no illusions concerning positive decision of my case by the Belarusian courts, but will appeal against the verdict to Minsk city court and the Supreme Court. It is a necessary procedure before directing a complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee.

Anatol Liabedzka was temporary prohibited to travel abroad because of the criminal case, brought against him by the General Prosecutor’s office in 2004. The politician was charged under part 1 of Article 367 (defamation of the president of Belarus) after an interview to the Lyustra program of the TV channel Russia and an article in the Narodnaya Volia newspaper.
