Mikhail Marynich: One More Month in Detention

27.09.2004.

“If Mikhail Marynich is bailed out he may abscond from investigation and somehow impede ascertainment of facts in his criminal case”, grounded the Prosecutor’s Office its decision to extend Marynich’s detention term for 1 more month.
The former Minister and Ambassador is kept in KGB detention center since April 24. He is charged with illegal actions with arms, and, since September 23, with stealing secret documents and property. He is facing the punishment up to 15 years of prison.
Lawyer Vera Stramkowskaya disagrees with the prosecutor’s decision: “I think the decision is groundless and has no juridical sense. Also it is very harmful for Mikhail Marynich’s health”. The lawyer says she will appeal the prosecutor’s decision in court.
Mikhail Marynich does not plead guilty. He thinks he is persecuted for political reasons. The opposition parties and human rights activists share this opinion.
