Human Rights Activist Mikalai Aksamit and Mestnaya Gazeta Chief Editor Andrei Shantarovich Continue Hunger Strike

29.10.2004.

Human rights activist Mikalai Aksamit, who was a proxy of parliamentary candidate Mikalai Awtukhovich is on hunger strike in Vawkavysk, reports RFE/RL. He protests against the results of elections, which, he believes, were rigged. He applied to the city administration with the demand to investigate all cases of violations and punish the guilty.
We should remind the readers, that Mestnaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Andrei Shantarovich has been on hunger strike since October 20. He protests against suspension of his newspaper by the Ministry of Information. He also demands the local authorities' permission to rent an office in Vawkavysk. Now it is registered in Smarhon, home town of Mr. Shantarovich. By the way, before the newspaper was suspended, the publisher issued two versions of Mestnaya Gazeta – for Vawkavysk and Smarhon areas.
