Minsk allowed an action in commemoration of the Chernobyl disaster, Babruisk authorities banned a picket.

22.04.2005.

On 21 April Minsk City Executive Committee officially allowed holding a meeting outside the Chernobyl Chapel in Karastaianava Street from 7 p.m. till 10 p.m. on 26 April, reported the press-service of the BPF Party. Minsk City Executive Committee received an application for holding a meeting on 12 April. The applicants were the member of the BPF Party Mr. Uladzimir Labkovich and the United Civil Party member Ms Maryna Bahdanovich.
According to the deputy chair of the BPF Party Mr. Viktar Ivashkievich, on 26 April at 6 p.m. the organization committee for commemorating the 19th anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster invites people to come and put into the mailbox at the Administration Office of Aliaxandr Lukashenka (38 Karl Marx Street) statements mentioning cases related to the consequence of the Chernobyl Disaster, and demands:
relocate people from heavily contaminated territories (15 Curies and above),provide medications and treatment to those who became disabled as a result of the Chernobyl Disaster, tell the truth about the disaster consequences, stop production of foods on the contaminated territories, cancel restrictions on the foreign humanitarian aid to Chernobyl-affected people and on the recreation of children abroad, stop the enforced employment of university graduates in Chernobyl-affected area.
After handing the statements over, the people are invited to attend the place of the allowed meeting.
At the same time Babruisk authorities did not allow the democrats to hold on 26 April a picket in the city center, which is devoted to the 19th anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster.
Representatives of various political parties and organizations (UCP, BPF, the Free Trade Union, Social-Democrats, etc.) filed such a request with Babruisk City Executive Committee. The oppositionists also proposed to the authorities joint actions on 26 April.
However, in the evening of 20 April, one of the applicants, the chair of the Babruisk City Branch of the UCP Uladzimier Kurtukou was visited by several people from the administration of Leninski Borough of Babruisk. He was officially informed that the action was not permitted because the request did not indicate those responsible for the conduct of the event.
Uladzimier Kurtukou called the denial reason a formal one. Also, the UCP leader in Babruisk added that the democrats submits such requests to the authorities every year, and every year the officials find new reasons to deny permission.
However, Babruisk activist decided that on 26 April they would hold an action: in the city center they will commemorate the victims to the Chernobyl Disaster with candles in their hands. The action in commemoration of the radiation disaster is prepared in Mahilou, informs the Radio Liberty.
