Andrei Ianushkievich was fined for handing out fly-sheets with the demand to rename one of Hrodna streets to Vasil Bykau Street

02.08.2005.

The administrative commission of Kastrychnitski borough of Hrodna fined the democratic activist Andrei Ianushkievich about $12 for handing out fly-sheets with the demand to authorities to rename one of the streets to Vasil Bykau Street (Vasil Bykau is one of the famous Belarusian writers, haunted by Belarusian authorities till death. As a result of such treatment he had to spend the last years of his life abroad, and returned to Belarus shortly before death). It was qualified as violation of part 3 of Article #172 of the Code of Administrative Violations. According to Ianushkievich, the decision of the commission was made with violations of the procedure – there was no case consideration, the ruling was prepared in advance. Now he has 10 days to complain against the punishment.
