Ibrahim Kanapatski Buried in Smilavichy

The well-known activist of the Tatar minority in Belarus Ibrahim Kanapatski unexpectedly died in Minsk on 9 September, being 56 years old. The funeral participants proposed to install a memory shield on the wall of the house in Smilavichy where he used to live and rename Republican Street in his honor.

Ibrahim Kanapatski made a considerable contribution to Belarusian and Tartarian culture. He hold lectures on Belarusian history in Belarusian language at Belarusian State Pedagogic University, edited Bayram magazine where translations into Belarusian were published, take part in restoration of old and building of new mosques in Belarus. The funeral was attended by representatives of many national cultural societies, including Russian and Ukrainian.
