Union of Belarusian Writers Has Been Evicted from House of Literary Workers

On 30 August court marshals came to the former House of Literary Workers in order to start the eviction of the Union of Belarusian Writers according to the appropriate decision of the Economic Court of Minsk. According to RFE/RL, the negotiations of the UBW chairman Ales Pashkevich with the chair of the management department of the presidential administration Aliaksandr Kulishou was fruitless. The writers were ordered to leave the house and weren’t allowed even to rent a small room there. That’s why the organization had to pass to the presidential administration even the memorial room of the Belarusian poet Maksim Tank.On 30 August the UBW members gathered in the house for the last time. At the meeting it was decided to hold the next assembly of the organization in the beginning of October. There were also adopted some amendments to the statute.
