Local Councilors Speak in Support of Their Colleagues

25.09.2006.

About 30 local councilors from different regions of the country passed a resolution demanding to restore their fired colleagues at their old posts. Recently several pro-democratic local councilors were fired from work because of their political and social activities. Ales Mikhalevich, councilor of Pukhavichy district council, told RFE/RL, members of the Assembly of Local Councilors demand to restore Babruisk teacher Ales Chyhir at work. He was not only fired from school where he taught history, but was also sentenced to 10 days in jail.
Pro-democratic local councilors suggested that the United Democratic Forces should organize a “March of Freedom” in Minsk in order to demand new free and fair presidential elections. Participants of the councilors’ meeting also believe that the upcoming local election should be primarily used as a possibility to deliver their message to the voters.
