Mahiliou: KGB Continues Pressurizing Young Front Activists

05.10.2006.

On Monday KGB continued pressure on the detained underage participants of the last meeting of the local branch of the Young Front arrested on 14 September. In the end of last week 7 students of Mahiliou lyceums were summoned by administrations of their educational institutions. They had conversations with a KGB officer there. A KGB man threatened eviction and demanded the activists to explain their actions. The same repeated in Mahiliou gymnasium #2.

The actions of the director of the gymnasium Sviatlana Sakovich could be called symptomatic. On the phone she told to a reporter of Radio Racyja that there was not politically motivated pressure on students, no KGB officers visited the educational institution, and even that gymnasium’s students hadn’t been detained by police. The irony of fate was that just then parents of one of the detained boys were present in the office of the gymnasium director. She had summoned them for a conversation connected with the visit of a KGB officer.

There is a sad joke in Mahiliou that soon they should have to look for a place for studies of schoolchildren, as there were many pupils of 10th form among the detainees. The secret services probably won’t be able to deprive the young people right for education completely, but the variant of sending students from lyceums and gymnasiums to ordinary schools with a lower level of education worries teenagers’ parents.
