Ten Belshyna Workers on Hunger Strike

Alena Zakhozhaya, activist of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union, is on hunger-strike for 24 days. Today, on October 26, 10 workers of Belshyna company, are on hunger-strike.

The local independent trade union leader Ryhor Spasiuk told RFE/RL, they were forced to increase the number of hunger-strike participants. Last Wednesday meeting of hunger-strikers with Belshyna director Zmitser Katsiarynich was not successful. According to Spasiuk, the company director refuses to provide conditions for registration of the local union. Besides that, Spasiuk says, the issue of reimbursement for unpaid health benefits and other grants.

The Council of the Belarusian Congress of the Democratic Trade Unions will discuss the Belshyna situation at its today’s session.
