Hrodna: Journalist Aliaksei Salei Sentenced to 7 Days of Jail

On 13 December Hrodna Leninski borough court sentenced the reporter of the magazine Magazyn Polski Aliaksei Salei to 7 days of arrest. The Charter’97 press-center has been informed about that y an activist of the Union of Poles in Belarus Andrzei Pachobut.

In the evening of 12 December Aliaksei Salei was detained by policemen. As said by Andrei Pachobut, the journalist left the editorial office for a few minutes and was detained. The magazine was being made up at that moment. Salei was charged with violation of two articles of the Administrative Code, 156 and 166 (petty hooliganism and insubordination to policemen’s orders).

Policemen were witnesses in the court. They stated that the journalist allegedly used foul language. The witnesses for the defense, who were present during the arrest, were not let into the court room.
