Hrodna: Police Detain Defenders of Architectural Monuments

According to the information of HR activist and journalist Viktar Sazonau, on 2 May a group of public and youth activists and well-known historians tried to prevent the ruining of the Old City. They stopped the bulldozer which was ruining the historical hillside on the bank of Nioman. They also hindered the digging of trenches near Hrodna synagogue.

Soon there came the police with the chair of Hrodna City Executive Committee Aliaksandr Antonenka at the head. The policemen forcedly dispersed the activists and detained four of them: Iury Hardzeyeu, Volha Lahvinovich and Ales and Volha Smalianchuks. At the police station the policemen took explanatory notes from the detainees and warned them that next time the latter would receive administrative penalties. Then the defenders of historical heritage were released.
