BPF Adradzhenne NGO Demands from Hrodna Authorities to Stop Destruction of Old City

In the statement it is said that ‘so-called reconstruction of the central part of Hrodna has lasted since the end of 2005. A number of archeological monuments and buildings of the end of 19^th- beginning of 20^th centuries which were beyond the borders of the protected zone of the Old City suffered because of it… This year the authorities plan to continue destructing the historical center of Hrodna (30 to 40 percent of the protected zone of the Old City).’

The authors emphasize that on 19 April the Belarusian national scientifical-methodical council on historical and cultural heritage approved this destruction.

To counteract to this the public association BPF Adradzhenne initiates the creation of a nationwide committee of salvation of the historical center of the city; expresses impeachment to the Belarusian national scientifical-methodical council on historical and cultural heritage which approved demolition of more than 40 buildings there; demands public hearings on the issue of ruination of the historical center of HRodna with participation of the city authorities, the Ministry of Culture, the Belarusian association for protection of monuments of history and culture, the National commission of Belarus on UNESCO affairs, specialists on town planning and independent experts.

The Soym of the NGO entrusted Hrodna regional and Hrodna city councils to start the information campaign for protection of the historical face of Hrodna.
