Brest Regional Court Takes Side of State Official

04.08.2007. Tags: administrative trials.

On 2 August Brest regional court rejected the cassation complaint of the former workers of Brest regional TV Liliya Drahachynskaya and Volha Shutava.

In the beginning of June Leninski borough court of Brest partially satisfied a suit of the director of Brest TV and Radio Company Larysa Dabradomava to Drahachynskaya and Shutava. Dabradomava decided that in their complaints to control organs the workers insulted her honor, dignity and business reputation. The court sentenced Shutava to pay 300 000 rubles (abut 140 US dollars) to Dabradomava, and Drahachynskaya, Kaplin and Lyskovich – 200 000 rubles each. The workers were also ordered to compensate the court expenditures to the director of the TV and Radio Company including the lawyer’s services and the court fee – 956 000 rubles (about 440 US dollars).

On 2 August Brest regional court left the verdict of Leninski borough court of Brest in force. It only specified the part of the court expenses which was to be paid by each of the defendants. Besides, the defendants are to disprove some of their information about Dabradomava to the state organs to which they had filed the complaints. However, they categorically refuse to do it. A human rights activist Uladzimir Vialichkin believes that the court instances try to intimidate people so that they would no more complain on state officials to state organs.
