Student of Mahiliou Pedagogic University Advised to Stop Meeting with Oppositionists

On 3 March the administration of the faculty of technologies of Mazyr State Pedagogic University warned the third-year student Katsiaryna Manchuk about inadmissibility of meetings with activists of youth democratic movement.

According to Katsiaryna Manchuk, on 16 February she participated in a meeting of democratic activists in one of Minsk suburbs. The police detained 30 persons who were present at the meeting. On 29 February the girl met in Mazyr with Pavel Nazdra, coordinator of the organizing group of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party. She believes that these meetings are the reason for threats from the side of the university administration.

‘Today I was called to the dean’s office. The dean, Uladzimir Kanoplich, said that he wanted to talk with me and invited the provost on ideological work. An unknown man was sitting in the office. He asked no questions, but was writing something down all the time. The provost warned me that I can have problems because of my active position: for instance, I can be expelled from the university. He even said that I can get to prison.’

According to K.Manchuk, she studies well and misses no classes. However, she was informally warned that she had to ‘behave’ to continue her studying.
