Brest Young Front member Ivan Stasiuk is faces prosecution under Article 339.1 (hooliganism) of the Belarusian Criminal Code. The activist had been initially summoned by the police to testify in a criminal case over a street fight in downtown Brest on 23 January. However, he was later officially declared suspect in the case and imprisoned.
On 6 February Ivan Stasiuk was released without recognizance to leave.
The activist says the case is politically-motivated and believes the prosecution is caused by his intent to run in the forthcoming local elections.
‘I did not take part in the incident. That they have found a witness who testifies against me only convinces me that it’s all about my desire to run in the election,’ says Mr. Stasiuk.
