Belarusian oppositionists Anatol Liabedzka, Alexander Kazulin, and Vintsuk Viachorka were detained at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border in the morning on 3 April.

Aliaksandr Kazulin, ex-rector of Belarusian State University and ex-presidential candidate, expressed his vision concerning the registration of the Nasha Viasna human rights organization. ‘I think that the official registration of the Nasha Viasna human rights association is a necessary condition for our citizens to understand that they can be somehow protected against the law. The organization has a long history with many good deeds behind, and these are concrete cases not to be denied by anyone. And its illegal status makes me fear that the official Minsk cannot act honestly in its relations with Europe and find any definite and clear policy. To me, Viasna is one of the most effective human rights organizations, which has been active for almost 13 years, rendering assistance to ordinary people.’

11.10.2008 Salihorsk: police beat human rights activist

On 9 October in Salihorsk the human rights activist Yana Palyakova was beaten up by unknown people. She was beaten again at the police department. She said in an interview to RFE/RL she had been attacked at 5 in the evening.

16.08.2008 Kazulin is free

Today Aliaksandar Kazulin has been released from Vitsba-3 prison. He was serving the 5.5-year prison term, allegedly for hooliganism, after challenging Aliaksandar Lukashenka during the presidential election. Kazulin was granted pardon by special edict, signed by Lukashenka on Friday.

Siarhei Parsiukevich has found himself without money and food after he was transferred to the Shklou penal colony. According to his wife, Vitsebsk entrepreneurs have recently attended the prison to pass him a food parcel, but the administration of the colony refused to accept it, RFE/RL reports.

The commission on the cases of minors of Pershamaiski district executive committee of Vitsebsk has issued warnings to the 17-year-old pupils of school #38, Krystsina and Viktoryia Chyzh, after the sisters were detained on 16 April, at an action of solidarity with political prisoners.

03.04.2008 Kazulin Stays in Jail

25 March the administration of the Vitsba-3 prison refused to grant parole to the former presidential candidate, leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Hramada Alexander Kazulin. The prisoner’s daughter Yuliya Kazulina was informed about it by the department of punishment implementation.

Political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin was rejected the commutation the second time, Interfax learnt from Vitba-3 penal colony, where he is serving the term of punishment.

Brest city executive committee satisfied the application for authorization of a picket in support of release of the former candidate to president, chairman of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Hramada Aliaksandr Kazulin from jail.
