12.08.2010 Brest police say arrest of trade union leader Chaikouski was legal

Viktar Chaikouski, deputy chair of civil association ‘Perspektyva’ and member of the Free Belarusian Trade Union, received a reply from Brest city transport police department concerning his detention at the city’s railway station back on 19 July, Radio Racyja reports.

02.08.2010 Young people in Belarus arrested for national symbols

On August 1 two Young Front activists were detained in the town of Barysau for propagation of national symbols. On Sunday evening policemen detained Hanna Sharuba and Uladzislau Yaryomenka in Barysau. The Young Front members were decorating the town with national symbols, the press-service of the Young Front informs.

Anatol Paplauny, a Homel human rights defender who had received administrative punishment for participation in the Chain of Concerned People, an action dedicated to commemoration of the missing public and political activists and support to their families and political prisoners, passed an individual communication to the UN Human Rights Committee in connection with violation by Belarus of his rights to fair trial and freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

31.05.2010 Opposition activist from Mahiliou detained after Young Front congress

Uladzimir Zorki from Mahiliou ended up being detained and interrogated by special agents after the 7th founding congress of the Malady Front (Young Front) organization. The policemen arrested the young man on October Square, when he was with his friends in the center of Minsk awaiting his train to Mahiliou, Young Front spokesman Stanislau Stesik told Euroradio.

27.05.2010 Belgium national to appeal illegal arrest by Belarusian police

Today, on 27 May, a Belgium citizen Adrien Baudouin lodged a complaint with Minsk Maskouski Court, appealing against illegal actions by the police on 17 May, when he was illegally detained together with other participants of an educational event – screening of a film.

18.05.2010 Dozens searches across Belarus

The local offices of the ‘Havary Praudu’ civil campaign are searched by the police and the KGB, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports. The cities under attack include Brest, Homel, Hrodna, Barysau, Mahiliou and Minsk. The search at the campaign’s Minsk office was sanctioned by the city’s Leninski Prosecutor’s Office. The law enforcement agencies seize office equipment and printed materials.

17.05.2010 Distributor of ‘Novy Chas’ independent newspaper detained by Hrodna police

Dzmitry Bandarchuk, activist of the United Civic Party, was arrested by the Hrodna city police as he was carrying 200 copies of officially registered newspaper ‘Novy Chas’. The distributor was detained outside the city’s bus station, a few minutes after he received the newspapers from his partner and reported this to a friend of his by the phone.

11.05.2010 Vitsebsk: Kavalenka brothers released from jail

On 10 May morning, the Vitsebsk activists Siarhei and Vital Kavalenkas were released from the pre-trial prison where they were kept for a day.
