02.10.2008 Candidate from United Civil Party is fired from job

After participation in the parliamentary elections the candidate of the United Democratic Party Viktar Padchynenkau was forced to write a letter of resignation from his position due to a desire to terminate his employment.

15.09.2008 KGB ‘checks’ workers of Institute of History

In the second half of August and in the beginning of September KGB officers held a ‘voluntary’ questioning of workers of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus in connection with the 4 July explosion in Minsk. The ‘questioning’ was conducted in the working time. The KGB workers occupied the scientists’ offices and working places for it. Those who refused to participate in these measures are threatened with dismissal.

15.08.2008 Homel: procuracy upholds dismissal from work for oppositional pretender for candidate

One of the tendencies of electoral campaign’2008 is that potential candidates that are not nominated by the regime are threatened with dismissal from work or even dismissed. The law enforcing agencies usually close their eyes to such actions. One of the latest exampled is the reaction of the procuracy to the dismissal threats received by a pretender for candidate at Buda-Kashaliova constituency Kanstantsin Zhukouski.

14.08.2008 Homel: activist of united democratic forces Ales Sivakou is dismissed from job

In Homel the democratic activist Ales Sivakou, the head of the initiative group of Kanstantsin Zhukouski, is fired from Homelkhlebpram enterprise. According to the activist, the marketing director of the enterprise told him to write an application for dismissal on his own free will, because otherwise he would be dismissed under an article of the Labor Code and the information would be put in his service record.

12.08.2008 Vitsebsk: candidate Levinau fired from police, but his harassment continues

On 12 August at 9.15 am the administration of Chyhunachny district police department of Vitsebsk familiarized Andrei Levinau with the conclusiong of the head of the police department of Vitsebsk oblast executive committee, colonel Farmahei, according to which Levinau was to be fired from police.

An activist of the Party of Communists Belarusian Vasil Mamkin has been fired from the open stock company Elektraaparatura where worked for more than 25 years. He has sued to Chyhunachny district court of Homel for rehabilitation at work. He also demands from the defendant 10 million rubles in moral damages.

On 6 August a potential candidate at the parliamentary elections, the head of Kobryn town organization of the Belarusian Popular Front Party Alexander Mekh received an answer to his complaint to the KGB.

17.04.2008 Dobrush teacher fired for social activity

Dobrush district court turned down a claim by Klaudzia Varanets, a school teacher and a UCPB activist, demanding to reverse the decision by local education department to sack Varanets for ‘absence from work’ as she was having rest abroad. She was accused of failing to wait for the official permit for leave. Varanets’ lawyer Leanid Sudalenka says the school administration and the education department violated the labour legislation. He also said that he considers the verdict a politically motivated move.

10.04.2008 Opposition activists sacked

Vitsebsk opposition members have been put under pressure after the March 25 actions. Several activists that had to serve from 8 to 15 days of prison for participating in the celebration of the Freedom Day, were either recommended to leave their jobs or fired by their employers.
